Highs and lows.
My high school a cappella group, Rhapsody, used to start every rehearsal by going around and sharing the best and worst parts of our day. We bonded through shared woes, and celebrated each others’ achievements.
If you’re like me, you probably see a lot of highs and lows circulating on social media. Weddings and obituaries. 5-star reviews and 1-star reviews. Love stories and breakups.
We’ve become so wired to fixate on these positives and negatives that I sometimes worry about our ability to handle the in-betweens. What happens during the ordinary times of our life, when things are going well— no amazing announcements, but also no tragedies? Can we still be happy?
I’m working on soaking in the mediocre-seeming moments of life. Though a work in progress, I’ve found a few things that can help.
Finding joy in small things like a burst of sunshine after days of rain (or lately, snow).
Romanticizing my routine, with inspiration from the amazing Anna Vatuone – she does this so well.
Taking moments out of my day to show gratitude and be present.
